Delhi’s Air Pollution Linked to Brain Changes Beyond Lungs

Delhi University researchers studied 129 papers about air pollution and the brain.

They focused especially on tiny particles called PM2.5.

The studies suggest that breathing polluted air for a long time may affect memory, attention and decision-making.

Some studies also found changes in brain size and in areas involved in learning and memory.

Pollution may cause inflammation and stress inside brain cells.

It may also harm the systems that give brain cells energy and protect the brain from harmful substances.

Children may be at risk because their brains are still growing, while older adults and young adults have also shown possible changes.

The researchers said these findings are concerning, but they do not prove that pollution by itself causes diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s.

More research is needed to understand the long-term effects.
