India Pushes for Tech Transfer at WTO
India wants the World Trade Organization (WTO) to help developing countries get better technology.
They think this is important because these countries need advanced technology to trade more, especially technologies that are good for the environment.
India has suggested that the WTO should make sure developed countries share their technology, especially with poorer countries.
They also want the WTO to have a special group that works on this issue and makes sure it gets talked about regularly.
India believes this is part of a deal where developing countries agree to protect intellectual property rights, and in return, they should get help with technology.
India submitted a draft declaration to the WTO urging developed members to transfer advanced technology, particularly environmentally sound technologies (ESTs).
The WTO recognizes the importance of technology transfer to developing countries and LDCs in its core agreements, including the TRIPS pact.
India wants the WTO Secretariat to support the Working Group on Trade and Transfer of Technology by providing analytical inputs and documentation.
The draft declaration suggests making the Working Group on Trade and Transfer of Technology a standing item on the General Council's agenda.
India highlights the need for technology transfer, especially in light of environmental standards like the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which can act as trade barriers.
