Birkin Bag Prices Sinking at Auctions
Birkin bags are famous luxury handbags that used to always increase in value.
Recently, though, their prices at auctions have been going down.
Two special bags owned by Jane Birkin sold for millions, but most other Birkins are not selling for as much as they used to.
Experts say this is because there are more bags for sale and people have less money to spend.
Even so, Birkins still usually sell for more than their original price, and Hermes is still a top luxury brand.
Birkin bags, once seen as a safe luxury investment, are experiencing price declines at auctions.
Recent high-profile sales include Jane Birkin's original bag for $10 million and another for $2.9 million.
Resale premiums for Birkins and Kellys have dropped from 2.2 times retail in 2022 to 1.4 times in 2023.
Increased supply and economic factors like inflation are contributing to the price drop.
Despite the decline, most Birkins still sell for more than their retail price, and Hermes remains dominant in the luxury market.
