Kerala Reports Surge in Brain-Eating Amoeba Infections
Kerala in India has seen a big increase in brain-eating amoeba infections.
In 2025, there were 170 cases and 42 deaths.
This is a lot more than in previous years.
The amoeba, called Naegleria fowleri, lives in warm freshwater like lakes and rivers.
People can get sick if they swim in water that has the amoeba.
The government is working to stop the spread by doing research, teaching people how to stay safe, and monitoring the situation closely.
Kerala reported 170 cases and 42 deaths due to brain-eating amoeba infections in 2025.
Total cases since 2023 are 211, with 53 deaths.
The number of cases jumped from 2 in 2023 to 39 in 2024, and then to 170 in 2025.
The government conducted investigations and reinforced surveillance and education activities.
A revised Communicable Disease alert was issued in October 2024 to highlight management and preventive measures.
