Kerala High Court Suspends Sentences in Muthanga Land Struggle Case

The Muthanga land struggle was a protest by Adivasi people seeking land rights.

In 2003, protesters occupied forest land in the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary.

Police carried out an eviction operation on February 19, and the confrontation became violent.

Two protesters died immediately, and the total number of protester deaths later rose to five.

A police constable also died.

A trial court later convicted four people, including activist M. Geethanandan, for several offences.

The Kerala High Court has temporarily paused their prison sentences and wants to examine the trial court’s decision more carefully.

The four people must each deposit Rs 36,000 while their appeals continue.
