Sugar Futures Rise on India Supply Tightness, Demand Uncertainty

Sugar Futures Rise on India Supply Tightness, Demand Uncertainty

Sugar prices went up this week because India does not have as much sugar as usual.

India said it can import up to 1 million tons without paying an import tax.

The country wants more sugar before its festival season, when people usually buy more.

India had allowed sugar exports earlier even though its harvest was smaller than expected.

This caused local supplies to become unusually low and prices to reach records.

Brazil may make more sugar instead of ethanol, which could increase supplies later.

However, buyers are ordering less sugar because of problems connected to the war in Iran.

Some sugar shipments are already traveling to India, which could help refill its stockpiles.
