Apple Trains Its Own China AI Model with Alibaba Support
Apple makes iPhones and other gadgets.
It wants its devices to be smart.
A smart assistant needs a big computer brain called an AI model.
Apple trained a new AI brain just for China.
A big Chinese company named Alibaba helped Apple build it.
This is different from before.
Earlier, Apple planned to use AI brains made by other companies in China.
Some popular American AI brains, like ChatGPT, do not work in China.
So Apple made its own brain for that country.
The news is based on what three people who know about it said.
Apple has trained a large language model specifically for the China market, according to three people familiar with the matter.
The model was developed in partnership with Alibaba Group, which provided support for the training.
The move marks a departure from Apple's strategy of relying on third-party models to power AI features in China.
Apple had previously leaned toward domestic partners' models to bring generative AI to iPhones and other devices sold in China.
U.S. models such as Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's ChatGPT, which Apple pairs with its own technology at home, are not available in China.
