Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way Boards Dolphin Documentary 'Freeing Flipper'
A famous movie star named Leonardo DiCaprio has a movie company called Appian Way.
His company is helping to make a new documentary movie called 'Freeing Flipper.'
A documentary is a movie about real people and real events.
The movie tells the story of a man named Ric O'Barry.
In the 1960s, Ric trained dolphins for a popular TV show called 'Flipper.'
After his dolphin Kathie died in his arms, Ric felt he had to stop exploiting dolphins and started fighting to set captive dolphins free.
He founded an organization called the Dolphin Project and has spent more than fifty years trying to give dolphins their freedom.
The movie shows how dolphins are treated in places like marine parks and during dolphin hunts, and it includes amazing underwater pictures of dolphins.
Ric says every captive dolphin deserves a way home, and he wants people to see the story behind his lifelong mission.
Appian Way, the production company founded by Leonardo DiCaprio, will executive produce 'Freeing Flipper,' a documentary about dolphin-trainer-turned-activist Ric O'Barry.
Directed by Barney Douglas, the film features Fisher Stevens, Maisie Williams, Stephen Stills, Lincoln O'Barry and Dr. Jane Goodall in one of her final interviews before her passing last year.
O'Barry trained dolphins for the 1960s TV series 'Flipper' and became a fierce advocate for freeing captive dolphins after his dolphin Kathie died in his arms.
As founder of the Dolphin Project, O'Barry has exposed dolphin captivity in marine parks and Japan's dolphin hunts, and his work was central to the Oscar-winning 2009 documentary 'The Cove.'
Dogwoof will launch international sales of the film at the upcoming TIFF market, with underwater cinematographer Pete Zuccarini creating 'dolphin's-eye' sequences.
