Farmers Demand Legal MSP Guarantee to Panel
Farmers from different states met with a panel set up by the Supreme Court.
They asked the panel to recommend that the government should guarantee a minimum price for all crops.
This price is called MSP.
The farmers said they are not getting this price for their crops.
They also said the government should buy all crops or act as a guarantor.
The panel is preparing a report to give to the Supreme Court.
The farmers also talked about how importing crops is expensive for India and suggested growing more crops locally.
They shared stories of how they are not getting fair prices for their crops, like paddy and cotton.
The panel has met with other experts and will continue to talk to more farmer groups.
Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM)-non political met with the Supreme Court-constituted panel to demand a legal guarantee of MSP for all 22 crops.
Farmers claimed they are not receiving the MSP for crops that are supposed to be covered under it.
The panel, led by Justice Nawab Singh, held its first meeting with farmers after over 30 sessions with other stakeholders.
Farmers linked financial losses to farmer suicides and demanded MSP on the lines of the MS Swaminathan committee report.
The panel's interim report is ready and will be submitted to the Supreme Court soon.
