Gorkha Groups Push for Political Solution in Darjeeling
In the Darjeeling Hills, two groups of people want a new state called Gorkhaland.
One group, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, met the West Bengal chief minister in Kolkata to talk about jobs and wages for tea workers.
They also asked the state to make a plan that gives the hills a special political status.
The other group, the Gorkhaland Rastriya Manch, met a special government officer in New Delhi.
They said the only way to solve the problem is to create a new state called Gorkhaland.
They had a sit‑in protest at a big government building called Jantar Mantar.
Both groups want the same goal, but they are talking to different parts of the government.
The GJM talks to the state, while the GRM talks to the central government.
The hope is that the government will listen and make a decision soon.
Gorkha Janmukti Morcha met West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari in Kolkata to push for a constitutional political arrangement for Darjeeling Hills, Terai and Dooars.
The delegation demanded minimum wages for tea garden workers, a 20% bonus for plantation workers, and protection against vehicle scrapping policy.
Gorkhaland Rastriya Manch met Centre‑appointed interlocutor Pankaj Kumar Singh in New Delhi, insisting on the creation of a separate state of Gorkhaland.
The GRM delegation had earlier staged a sit‑in at Jantar Mantar and submitted a memorandum to the interlocutor.
The two groups pursue different strategies: GJM engages the state government on governance, while GRM pushes for central‑level statehood.
