Expert Warns Himalayan Flash-Flood Risks Grow Amid Nepal Catastrophe

The Himalayas contain glaciers, frozen ground and lakes formed by melting ice.

These features are part of what scientists call the cryosphere.

They can become dangerous when something triggers them, such as melting or a glacier breaking away.

In Nepal, a glacier detachment caused a large flow of rocks and mud called a debris flow.

Similar dangers may exist in the Indian Himalayas.

Scientists say glacial lakes are growing while glaciers are shrinking.

They do not yet know exactly how large the risks are because more research is needed.

Watching the entire mountain range is very difficult.

Water from mountain hazards could eventually flow toward India.
