Assam CM: Caste Census to Benefit Indigenous Muslims
Assam's chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, believes a caste census will help indigenous Muslim communities.
The central government is planning a census in 2027 that will include caste information.
These communities, who live in the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys, want to be recognized separately based on their culture, ethnicity and language.
They feel distinct from other Muslims.
The census is meant to officially acknowledge their unique identities.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma stated indigenous Muslims will benefit from the caste census.
The central government announced the 16th national census, including caste enumeration, for 2027.
Indigenous Muslim communities in Assam requested a caste-based census.
The CM said the census is to formally recognize their unique socio-cultural identities.
Communities include Goria, Moria, Deshi, Syed, Jolha, Kiren, and Maimal Muslims.
