Madrid coffee company La Mexicana plans to expand as it marks a long history

Cafés La Mexicana began as a Madrid coffee shop in 1890, founded by Dolores Levil Biel, who had moved from Mexico to Spain.

The family-run company later passed to the Rodríguez family, whose members built it into a chain of shops and a coffee-roasting business.

Its Preciados Street shop holds a Guinness record for selling more coffee than any other coffee shop, with more than five million kilos sold in 24 square metres over 25 years.

The company roasts, packs and grinds 100% arabica beans from countries including Colombia, Brazil and Kenya.

It has eight company-owned shops, eight franchises and 12 counters, with five counters in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Coffee price rises and higher energy costs have put pressure on the business, which says it has kept prices more accessible by accepting narrower margins.

The company plans to expand its café at its factory and has announced two new openings, though the details are not given.
