Punk pioneer Gary Heffern dies at 72 after Hall of Fame honor
Gary Heffern, frontman of The Penetrators, has died at 72 in his native Finland.
The punk pioneer’s death came days after he and his band were inducted into the San Diego Music Hall of Fame on October 16, 2026.
Heffern was an early influence on Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder, who grew up in San Diego.
The two later worked together on Heffern’s 1995 album Painful Days.
The Penetrators were described by a friend as a groundbreaking band and a movement in punk music.
No cause of death has been reported, and Vedder had not publicly commented at the time of the reports.
