Pyeongchang plans solar and wind projects to share revenue with residents

Pyeongchang County in South Korea’s Gangwon Province plans to invest in renewable energy projects and return some of the profits to residents.

The county is due to sign an agreement with Jeongsang Group on a 150-megawatt solar plant in Yupo-ri.

It also signed an agreement for a wind power project at Unduryeong on October 28.

Both projects aim to begin commercial operation in 2029.

Pyeongchang plans to use revenue from its stakes in the projects for residents’ basic income and welfare, rather than keeping it only for the projects.

The county wants to expand its renewable energy holdings by 2035, including by considering more solar sites on unused county land and possible redevelopment of a cancelled wind farm.
