Turkey fuel taxes set to push petrol above 80 lira and diesel above 100

Turkey is due to raise fuel excise taxes from 1 November as part of a phased change to its fuel pricing system.

The increase is expected to add 4.15 lira per litre to petrol and 3.60 lira to diesel, including VAT.

Based on prices reported in Istanbul, petrol could rise to about 80.45 lira a litre and diesel to 100.50 lira.

The LPG increase is only a reported possibility: industry sources say a 9-lira rise could start on 3 November, but it has not been officially confirmed.

The tax system had absorbed part of fuel price increases to limit what drivers paid at the pump, and the new step is part of a gradual move away from that approach.

Higher diesel costs could raise transport expenses, putting pressure on delivery, food and other goods prices as well as public transport fares.

The petrol and diesel changes are expected to take effect on 1 November, while the timing of the pump price updates may depend on when suppliers apply them.
