Mitsubishi's new Pajero draws 5,500 reservations ahead of December launch
Mitsubishi has received about 5,500 reservations for its new Pajero SUV, ahead of its December 17 launch in Japan.
That is more than the company’s target of 4,000 for the current fiscal year.
The Pajero is returning to Japan after domestic production ended in 2019, a gap of seven years.
Its four grades are priced from ¥6.193 million to ¥7.95 million, making it Mitsubishi’s most expensive vehicle sold in Japan.
The company is pitching the SUV’s driving performance and upscale interior, while also highlighting features intended to make it easier to use every day.
Japan’s off-road SUV market is led by Toyota’s Land Cruiser range, and new models from other automakers are also planned.
Mitsubishi aims to sell 1,000 Pajeros a month, but it remains to be seen whether demand will last as competition grows.
Mitsubishi Motors said reservations for its new Pajero have reached about 5,500, exceeding its fiscal-year target of 4,000.
The company will begin domestic sales on December 17, seven years after production of the previous Pajero for Japan ended.
Prices start at 6,193,000 yen, and the four grades are priced from 6.19 million to 7.95 million yen.
Mitsubishi aims to sell 1,000 vehicles a month in Japan and is positioning the SUV against Toyota’s Land Cruiser range.
The company says the vehicle’s features include a smaller engine and body than the Land Cruiser, along with a premium interior.
