China names provincial party chiefs ahead of key meeting
China’s Communist Party announced changes in six provinces on October 24, ahead of a major closed-door meeting in Beijing.
Wang Zhijun was named party secretary of Hunan, and Mo Gaoyi was appointed party secretary of Yunnan.
Appointments also point to new governors in Fujian, Qinghai, Jiangxi and Hebei, pending formal votes by provincial legislatures.
In Fujian, Guo Ningning is set to become governor, while Zhuge Yujie is expected to take the post in Qinghai.
The changes come before the party’s fifth plenum, scheduled for October 26 to 29.
The meeting is expected to focus on governance and discipline, though personnel matters may also be discussed.
Provincial legislatures must formally elect the governor appointments, a step that is generally procedural after the party’s decision.
Mo Gaoyi was named Communist Party secretary of Yunnan, replacing Wang Ning.
The announcement was part of personnel changes in six provinces made by China’s ruling Communist Party on Saturday.
Mo is a vice minister at the party’s publicity department and director of the State Council Information Office.
The changes came two days before a closed-door party meeting was due to begin in Beijing.
