AK Party spokesman says Ankara alone guides Turkey’s foreign policy
At an event in Ankara marking the AK Party’s 25th year since its founding and 24th year in power, spokesman Ömer Çelik said Ankara alone should guide Turkey’s foreign policy.
He rejected the idea that Turkey must follow a Western-led direction to avoid shifting its foreign policy course.
The AK Party, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, came to power in the early 2000s and describes itself as a conservative democratic party representing the political centre.
Çelik said Turkey does not want weaker or poorer neighbours, naming Syria, Iraq and Iran among the countries whose security matters to the region.
He argued that no country is safe unless its neighbours are safe too, and said Turkey wants stable, secure partners around it.
His remarks set out the party’s stated approach, but no new policy steps or timetable were announced.
AK Party spokesman Ömer Çelik said Ankara is the only axis guiding Turkey’s foreign policy.
He said no other axis can direct the country’s foreign policy.
Çelik made the remarks at an AK Party program at the party’s headquarters.
