Traditional Chinese Formula Shows Promise Against Drug-Resistant Esophageal Cancer in Tests
Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma is a common form of esophageal cancer, and it can become resistant to the chemotherapy drug cisplatin.
Researchers tested Huayu Wan against resistant cancer cells in laboratory experiments; the traditional Chinese medicine formula contains 15 ingredients.
The formula slowed the cells’ growth and appeared to trigger ferroptosis, a type of cell death driven by iron-related damage.
Huayu Wan also reduced tumor growth in mice implanted with resistant cancer cells, and their tumors contained more immune cells.
Combining it with anti-PD-1 treatment worked better in the mice than either treatment alone.
The findings are limited to cells and animals, so further research is needed to establish whether Huayu Wan is safe and effective for people.
Researchers tested Huayu Wan, a traditional Chinese medicine formula, against cisplatin-resistant esophageal cancer cells.
The formula suppressed cancer-cell activity and growth in laboratory tests, with stronger effects at higher doses or after longer exposure.
In mice, Huayu Wan was associated with smaller tumors and more CD8+ T cells than in untreated animals.
Combined with anti-PD–1 immunotherapy, it suppressed tumor growth more than either treatment alone.
The findings are limited to cell lines and an animal model, and further research is needed to assess safety and effectiveness in people.

What people are saying
Once resistance develops, patients are more likely to experience reduced responses to subsequent treatment and unfavorable survival outcomes
By coupling these two processes, Huayu Wan innovatively forces a breakdown of the cancer cells' redox defenses
It sparks uncontrolled lipid peroxidation while freeing iron from intracellular ferritin stores, which together drive robust ferroptotic cell death
