Moscow to host 2030 World Weightlifting Championships

The International Weightlifting Federation chose Moscow to host the 2030 world championships.

The event will be Russia’s first world championship in weightlifting since Moscow hosted it in 1983.

Russia has not hosted an international competition in an Olympic sport since 2021, according to one report.

In June 2026, the federation allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete in its events with their national flags and anthems.

The Moscow championship will be the first qualifying event for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

Russia’s weightlifting federation president said the competition should provide athletes with an important step toward those Games.

Organisers say they still have much work ahead to deliver the championship.
