Adif has awarded more emergency contracts in 2026 than in all of 2025

Spain’s rail infrastructure manager, Adif awarded 63 emergency contracts by September 2026, more than the 58 awarded in all of 2025.

The contracts fund urgent repairs and other work on the country’s rail network.

From January to September, 26% of Adif’s awarded funds went through contracts without open public tenders, twice the share recorded in 2025.

The number of emergency contracts rose, but their total value was lower: €155.74 million in 2026, compared with €232.75 million in 2025.

The earlier total was largely driven by repairs after severe flooding in Valencia, which received €191.9 million for emergency work.

Recent major projects include repairs to commuter rail lines near Madrid and damage to a track in Burgos.

The higher use of emergency contracting reflects pressure to repair faults and urgent damage across the network.
