Indian retail investors bought ₹10,572 crore in shares in September

Indian retail investors bought ₹10,572 crore of shares on the secondary market in September, returning after selling in July and August.

An oil-price spike contributed to a sharp market correction after the first week of September, and the Sensex and Nifty fell about 6% that month.

Investors also bought ₹5,650 crore in the primary market, where companies issue shares to the public, extending that buying streak to nine months.

Together, retail investors’ secondary- and primary-market purchases reached ₹66,938 crore so far in 2026.

The September buying came as share prices fell, while foreign investors were selling, and analysts described it as a response to lower prices rather than a surge in speculation.

Further buying may be selective, with valuations, company earnings, oil prices, foreign investor outflows and global uncertainty among the factors that could affect participation.
