India’s GST Council approves measures to ease compliance and reduce disputes

India’s GST Council approved measures to simplify tax compliance at a meeting in New Delhi.

The changes aim to make registration, refunds and input tax credits easier, especially for smaller businesses.

No GST rates changed at the meeting; rate decisions are now expected only once a year.

Small sellers using e-commerce platforms will be able to register in one state instead of every state where they sell.

Refund claims are proposed to be acknowledged within 10 days, and the government expects 90% of claims to be released within three working days after acknowledgement.

Notices will not be sent for tax amounts below ₹10,000, under new common standards for tax proceedings.

Most changes are expected from April 1, 2027; a proposed annual returns option for some small businesses still needs approval at the next Council meeting.
