Unsecured load smashes police car windscreen on Essex A120

An object came off Glenn Lillie’s car and smashed a police vehicle’s windscreen on the A120 in Essex.

The police officers were responding to an emergency when the item flew across the road and shattered the windscreen, covering them with glass.

The driver brought the damaged vehicle to a controlled stop, and the officers were not reported injured.

Lillie, 34, from Braintree, did not stop at the scene or report the collision; police identified him using camera footage and debris evidence.

He pleaded guilty to offences including dangerous driving and failing to stop or report the incident at Colchester Magistrates’ Court.

He received a 12-month community order with 140 hours of unpaid work and was ordered to pay £244; accounts differ on whether his driving ban was six or 12 months.

The incident highlights the danger of unsecured loads, which can put other road users at risk.
