US, China and Russia discuss possible summit with Korean Peninsula on agenda

The United States, China and Russia are discussing a possible leaders’ meeting during the APEC summit in Shenzhen, China, in November.

The meeting has not been officially confirmed, and China is handling preparations, according to Russia’s foreign minister.

Officials say Korean Peninsula issues are under consideration, possibly for a joint statement.

Other likely subjects include nuclear arms control and the war in Ukraine, while North Korea is not expected to be a main focus.

The three countries differ sharply on North Korea’s nuclear future: the United States backs its complete denuclearization and sanctions, while Russia opposes those positions and China has been reluctant to endorse explicit denuclearization language.

That makes a shared position on North Korea uncertain, and any mention may remain general or be left out.

South Korea says it is monitoring the discussions and coordinating with the United States so its interests are not sidelined.
