China approves first original drug developed with AI assistance

China approved its first original drug developed with AI assistance in September.

The drug, called Aipuswei, was developed by Westlake University and other institutions.

Its path from discovery through clinical trials took three and a half years, compared with the decade often associated with traditional drug development.

AI helped researchers search huge pools of chemical compounds and predict safety risks, speeding up early stages of the work.

Faster screening does not mean more drugs will succeed: candidates still need extensive testing, and experts warn that more AI-generated molecules can also mean more failures.

The next challenge is to test candidates effectively, using reliable, standardized data and evidence that a medicine helps patients.

China’s latest five-year plan for the pharmaceutical industry calls for systems to collect and track data across AI-assisted drug development, and sets targets for the sector by 2030.
