CMEWA returns to Kalgoorlie to mark 125 years

The Chamber of Mining and Energy WA returned to Kalgoorlie this week to mark 125 years as an organisation.

Its roots lie in several groups formed during Western Australia’s 1890s gold rush to represent the interests of miners and the resources sector.

The Chamber of Mines of WA was formally incorporated in 1901, and Richard Hamilton became its first president.

In 1907, the chamber began funding a police unit to investigate gold theft, and it also established a mine rescue service.

The rescue competitions became an annual tradition from 1911, helping teams practise emergency responses and share experience.

The police unit’s successor remains part of WA Police and also investigates other crimes on mine sites.

The anniversary return to Kalgoorlie highlights the chamber’s long connection to the Goldfields and the wider state.
