Jáuregui’s defense says Mexico’s PAN has ignored requests for support
Lawyer Luis Villegas Montes says the PAN’s national leadership has not answered requests to support César Jáuregui, a former prosecutor in the Mexican state of Chihuahua.
Jáuregui is accused of treason, and he could face up to seven years in prison for the alleged illegal exercise of public service.
Villegas says three PAN members sent the party a letter asking for institutional support for Jáuregui.
The defense says the party previously supported Chihuahua Governor María Eugenia Campos when she faced an equivalent accusation, and argues it should treat the cases alike.
Villegas also says the party’s silence has caused discontent in Chihuahua and predicts a split within its state organization.
He says Ricardo Anaya has spoken in Jáuregui’s favor and hopes party leaders, including national president Jorge Romero, will take a more active position.
César Jáuregui’s defense says Mexico’s National Action Party has not replied to repeated requests for institutional support.
Lawyer Luis Villegas Montes said the party’s national executive committee received several letters but did not respond.
The latest letter was sent by three PAN members who had met with Santiago Taboada, assigned by the party to handle its affairs in Chihuahua.
The defense is asking for support similar to that given to Chihuahua Governor María Eugenia Campos when she faced an equivalent accusation.
Villegas said Ricardo Anaya was the only party figure who had consistently spoken in Jáuregui’s favor.

What people are saying
The PAN national has maintained an inexplicable silence, because it is a very serious accusation, an unjust accusation, an absurd accusation.
There has been a brutal and sepulchral silence.
The only one who has spoken in a consistent and coherent and constant way is Ricardo Anaya.
