Former Indonesian journalists train to start egg farms
A training program in Bogor taught 135 former journalists to raise laying hens on October 14 and 15, 2026.
The participants include people who retired or lost their jobs, and the program aims to help them build a new source of income.
Each trainee received 10 hens, three months of feed and a coop to assemble at home.
The hens are expected to begin laying eggs in about four weeks, but 10 birds alone are not enough to support a family.
Success with the first group led to larger support, with Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman increasing the provision to 600 hens for groups of 10 former journalists.
Those running the farms must work together, control costs and find buyers, while keeping the hens, feed and coops in good condition.
The program has trained 255 former journalists since November 2025, through a partnership involving the Agrijurno Maju Bersama Foundation, a livestock training center and an agricultural college.
