France considers creating strategic grain reserves

France is considering creating strategic grain reserves as international instability raises concerns about food security.

The country has about 4,500 grain silos, enough to cover one month of baseline consumption in a conflict.

The silos are not protected as strategic reserves: owners face no export restrictions, and the sites have no security perimeters.

France had strategic food stocks after World War II but dismantled the system in the 1950s.

Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard has ordered a working group to prepare concrete policy proposals by the end of November.

The European Commission has also urged EU countries to strengthen food security within their own borders.

France’s next step is to consider the group’s proposals, but no decision to create reserves has been announced.

Today, work to build up strategic reserves is underway across Europe, in every single European nation except France. This is pure madness.

We have nuclear capabilities, but in reality, food security is far more critical, which is why we absolutely need to establish these stockpiles.
