South Korea’s Five Major Financial Groups Set Record Profit, Headline Says

South Korea’s five major financial groups are reported to have made a record 20 trillion won in profit this year.

The headline also says they collected 40 trillion won from interest, while the detailed figures cover results through the third quarter.

KB Financial Group led the figures provided, with 5.7921 trillion won in net profit.

Shinhan reported 5.0274 trillion won, and Hana reported 3.6243 trillion won; all three were up from a year earlier.

Woori was the exception, with profit down 4.95% to 2.6581 trillion won.

Higher interest rates and larger loan portfolios supported interest income at the groups, which earn interest on loans.

Future earnings may depend on interest rates and whether loan growth continues.

The figures also leave open whether lower costs or stronger non-interest income can help Woori improve its results.
