Ukrainians and Sudanese retain US deportation protections for now
Ukrainians and Sudanese in the United States remain protected from deportation for now, even though their protections were due to expire this week.
The protections come through Temporary Protected Status, which lets people from countries facing war or other crises stay in the US temporarily.
More than 100,000 Ukrainians and over 1,790 Sudanese were enrolled in the program as of March 2025.
Ukraine received the status after Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, and the US has renewed it before.
The Department of Homeland Security says an announcement on both countries will come later, but has not given a date.
The Trump administration has ended similar protections for people from other countries, leaving them vulnerable to detention and deportation.
Their longer-term status remains uncertain until the administration announces its decision.
