Election Commission eases procedures for Bengal SIR tribunals
The Election Commission is making Bengal’s SIR tribunal portal easier to use for judges handling appeals over electoral-roll eligibility.
The portal now allows judges to upload several orders at once, after some orders were left unuploaded amid concerns about Aadhaar authentication.
Judges can also save orders as drafts and revise them before issuing a final decision.
The portal already accepts documents beyond the original 13 listed categories, including other documents a judge considers relevant.
The commission plans to replace Aadhaar-based e-signing with digital signature certificates for judges’ logins and order uploads.
The new login system is expected this week, while the commission is also looking into judges’ request for more central offices.
These changes matter because they are intended to reduce administrative barriers as tribunals process appeals about who can be included on Bengal’s electoral rolls.
