Canada-India trade mission secures 30 partnerships worth $300 million

A 300-member Canadian trade mission secured about 30 partnerships worth $300 million during a week of business meetings in New Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru.

Canada and India are working to conclude a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, or CEPA, before mid-December, when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Canada.

Canada wants the agreement to lower Indian tariffs on exports, including pulses and potash.

India’s population of 1.4 billion and its growing economy make it an attractive market for Canadian businesses.

The trade push follows years of tension after Canada alleged Indian government agents were linked to the fatal shooting of a Sikh separatist leader in British Columbia; India rejected the allegations.

The two countries are trying to finalize the trade pact, but the sources do not say whether an agreement has been reached.
