Bradley Whitford Was on The Diplomat’s Casting Wishlist From Season 1

Bradley Whitford joined The Diplomat in Season 3 as Todd, the husband of Allison Janney’s character, Grace Penn.

The political drama is on Netflix and returned for its fourth season last week.

Casting director Julie Schubert said Whitford had been on the casting wishlist since Season 1, before his role as Todd was developed.

His past work with Janney on The West Wing made their pairing a happy coincidence, not the reason for the casting.

They play different characters with a new relationship in The Diplomat, rather than revisiting their West Wing roles.

Schubert also said Jodie Whittaker was her first choice to play the show’s new prime minister, Bethan Vaughn.

I think when Todd came about, and his availability opened up in a way that hadn't been before, it was a very easy conversation

It wasn't about recreating The West Wing. It was about creating a dynamic between two incredibly talented actors

I think why it works is because it's not The West Wing, and they're not playing the same characters
