Smita Jayakar recalls Bhansali scolding Salman Khan on film set

Smita Jayakar says Sanjay Leela Bhansali scolded Salman Khan for touching Aishwarya Rai Bachchan during a scene in the 1999 film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.

Jayakar, who played Rai’s on-screen mother, recalled the incident in a conversation with Siddhartha Kannan.

The touch was not part of the planned scene, in which Khan was meant to walk around a table and look at Rai.

Jayakar said Bhansali noticed the gesture and asked Khan why he had touched her.

She believed Khan acted on his feelings for Rai, and said the crew saw their affection during filming.

Their romance sometimes delayed the shoot, with Jayakar recalling that they could arrive together around 11 am while the crew waited.

Jayakar said their real-life romance helped the film’s on-screen chemistry.
