Brazil's finance minister says good-faith taxpayers will not be punished during tax changes
Brazilian Finance Minister Dario Durigan said good-faith taxpayers will not be punished as they adapt to the country's tax reform.
He made the commitment at a meeting with Brazil's Federal Accounting Council, where he acknowledged businesses' concerns about making mistakes under the new rules.
Tax authorities are expected to guide businesses through the changes, including any adjustments made along the way.
The reform was approved in 2023, and testing of new taxes began this year.
A new phase starts in 2027, when the changeover includes replacing several existing taxes with the CBS and a selective tax on some products.
The changes matter because businesses must learn new rules, and Durigan said better cooperation with accountants would help them comply.
The reform is also under debate in Brazil's presidential campaign; Senator Flávio Bolsonaro has proposed reviewing parts of it if elected.
