Italian savers turn to cautious investments as inflation concerns rise
A survey of more than 1,000 Italian bank customers found that savers are taking a more cautious approach to investing amid worries about inflation and global uncertainty.
The respondents represent about 35 million people with bank accounts in Italy, and half also hold financial products.
Compared with February, interest in deposit accounts rose from 12% to 15%, while preference for gold fell from 23% to 19%.
Deposit accounts can earn interest when money is held for a year or more, but rising living costs can reduce or erase those gains.
The cost of living is the leading concern across age groups, while younger respondents were more worried than older ones about pensions and uncontrolled development of artificial intelligence.
Among investors, 51% said they were fairly satisfied with their financial choices, and 25% said it was a good time to invest.
Returns now outweigh green investment choices for the first time since 2022, according to the survey.
An Anima Observatory survey found Italian savers more cautious about investments amid concerns about inflation and the future of the country.

Half of the survey sample owned financial products as well as a current account.
