Foreign investors pull R$8.86 billion from Brazil’s stock market

Foreign investors withdrew R$8.86 billion from Brazil’s stock market over four trading sessions between October 22 and 27.

That was 44% of the money they had invested in the market during October, though the month’s total balance remained positive.

Strategist José Cassiolato says the market is seeking a new price level for the Ibovespa, Brazil’s main stock index, after the election result.

He said the price fall was larger than expected given the amount of foreign money withdrawn, and that concern also affected Brazilian fixed-income investments and shares traded abroad.

The wider sell-off reflects rising concern about risk in Brazil, although the country’s commodities and financial sectors may still attract international investors.

Investors are watching the central bank’s interest-rate decision and the government’s economic team, including whether it signals a commitment to fiscal targets.

The election of the presidents of Brazil’s Senate and Chamber of Deputies, expected early next year, is another upcoming point of attention.
