Lula Congratulates Paraguay’s New President Pedro Alliana

Pedro Alliana took office as Paraguay’s president on Friday after the Senate impeached Santiago Peña.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva congratulated Alliana and said he hoped to work with him openly and cooperatively.

Peña’s impeachment followed the closure of Ueno bank, which had about three million customers and held public deposits.

Opposition lawmakers accused Peña of conflicts of interest and other wrongdoing linked to the bank, but the accusations are not presented as proven.

Alliana had served as vice-president and handled some foreign-policy duties.

Lula said stronger cooperation could benefit ties between Brazil and Paraguay and wider integration in South America.

Lula hopes to receive Alliana in Brasília soon to discuss the countries’ shared agenda and renew their historic ties.
