Helsing unveils AI-guided missiles to counter fast Russian drones

German defense company Helsing has unveiled Contra, an AI-guided air defense system designed to counter large attacks by drones and missiles.

The system is intended to help defend against Russian Geran drones, which have become faster and harder to intercept over Ukraine.

Contra uses two missiles: the jet-powered Inferno and the rocket-powered Ambush, which is designed to pursue threats that get past other defenses.

Helsing says its software can use sensor data to coordinate responses to hundreds or thousands of targets, while people set the rules and priorities.

The company says each interceptor could cost less than $100,000, far below the price of some existing air defense missiles that cost millions.

The system is still being tested, and Helsing expects it to be ready for sale in the second half of 2027.

The company says it has already signed one contract, but has not named the customer.
