Star-Club co-founder Horst Fascher dies aged 90

Horst Fascher has died aged 90 in Hamburg, the city where he was born and built his career.

He co-founded and managed the Star-Club, a music venue on the Große Freiheit street, and booked its performers.

After dismissing the Beatles in 1960, Fascher booked them two years later for the club.

The Star-Club opened on April 13, 1962, with the Beatles among the acts on its first night.

Fascher also brought major performers including Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Fats Domino and the Everly Brothers to the venue.

The club helped make Hamburg a key part of the Beatles’ early story, but its history also includes violence: authorities said 23 people were badly assaulted there, and Fascher was charged in eight cases of dangerous bodily harm.

The Star-Club closed in 1969, and the accounts of Fascher’s death give no further plans or next steps.
