Dementia caused more than 10% of Australian deaths in 2025

Australia registered 188,421 deaths in 2025, according to new national statistics.

Dementia caused 19,019 deaths, accounting for more than one in 10 for the first time.

It has been the country's leading cause of death since 2024, and an estimated 446,500 Australians are living with dementia.

The data also recorded 484 asthma deaths, the highest number in a decade, up from 478 in 2024.

Experts say many asthma deaths are preventable, as poorly controlled asthma and not using preventive treatment can raise the risk.

Women accounted for almost two-thirds of deaths from both asthma and dementia.

The figures have prompted calls for greater recognition and support for people affected by dementia, while asthma specialists urge people to discuss their treatment with a doctor.
