Japanese bowling pioneer Ritsuko Nakayama dies at 84

Ritsuko Nakayama, a pioneer of Japanese professional bowling, has died at 84.

She was one of 13 women who became professional bowlers in Japan in 1969, after playing high school volleyball in Kagoshima Prefecture.

In 1970, she became the first Japanese woman professional bowler to score a perfect 300 game, doing so in a televised tournament final.

She went on to win 33 professional titles and became known by the nickname “Refreshing Ritsuko.”

Bowling became a national pastime during Japan’s rapid economic growth, and the number of alleys rose from 970 in 1969 to 3,697 in 1972.

The boom faded after the 1973 oil shock.

Nakayama later became the bowling association’s first female president, in 2004, and was named honorary president in 2012.
