Jalisco lawmaker files gender-violence complaint against journalist

Jalisco lawmaker Candelaria Ochoa filed a complaint against journalist Jorge García Orozco alleging political violence based on gender.

The complaint followed García Orozco’s coverage of Ochoa’s four properties, including one he said was listed as acquired for zero pesos.

He says the information came from Ochoa’s public asset declaration, which he obtained from the Jalisco Congress.

Ochoa’s complaint says the coverage helped stigmatize her and led to harmful publications about her as a woman.

García Orozco says the case is an attempt to intimidate him and restrict his reporting; he has submitted arguments to the electoral authority and appeared at the regional electoral court to pursue his defense.

He says an adverse ruling could put press freedom at risk by treating publication of information in public documents as a form of violence.

For now, he plans to focus on his legal defense, and the sources do not say when a decision is expected.
