Five killed in Egyptian raid that seized drugs and weapons
Egyptian police killed five people in raids on suspected criminal groups in three areas, according to the Interior Ministry.
Officials said the five had previously been sentenced to prison for crimes including murder, drug trafficking and firearms offences.
The raids seized more than 250kg of drugs, including 42,000 tablets, as well as 76 weapon parts.
The ministry valued the drug haul at 155 million Egyptian pounds, or about $2.9 million, and said several other suspects were arrested.
Authorities did not identify the drugs, though Egypt has previously sought to curb the trade in Captagon, an addictive methamphetamine.
The operation was part of a wider crackdown after investigations found groups smuggling drugs, tablets and weapons in several parts of Egypt.
