Man charged with fraud over alleged dating-app money scams
A court in Tlalnepantla, Mexico, ordered Alfonso Álvarez Gutiérrez to face a fraud case on Friday.
More than 15 women have accused the 39-year-old of using dating apps such as Bumble and Tinder to meet women, build relationships and ask for money.
The women say he sometimes promised to repay them, then stopped communicating; some say he used different names and claimed he had been kidnapped.
The amounts women say they lost range from 60,000 to 500,000 pesos.
One woman, Paulina, said she lent him 168,000 pesos after meeting him on Bumble in 2024, and later recovered the money through an agreement.
She then forgave him, while seven other women attended the hearing hoping to bring their own cases to authorities.
The court case follows years of efforts to bring the allegations before a judge, and each woman’s claims still need to be investigated by authorities.
