New York City Marathon Sets Record With 61,146 Finishers

The New York City Marathon had 61,146 finishers on Sunday, November 1, setting a record for the largest marathon in history.

New York Road Runners said 61,529 runners started the race, which ran through Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan before ending in Central Park.

The finish total surpassed the London Marathon's 59,830 finishers earlier in 2026 and the New York race's previous record of 59,226 in 2025.

The five-borough route began in 1976, and this year's race marked its 50th anniversary.

The event raised more than $100 million for charity, exceeding its fundraising goal.

Runners from 153 countries took part, while Sweden's Andreas Almgren and Kenya's Sheila Chepkirui won the men's and women's open races.

The record adds to three straight years of growth in the race's number of finishers, according to the published results.
