US launches task force to disrupt weapons routes into Iran
The US military has launched Task Force Iron Gate to disrupt shipments into Iran.
The 20-person unit will be based in Tampa, Florida, and work with other US government agencies.
It will focus on land borders and the Caspian Sea, targeting advanced weapons, restricted materials and technologies that can have both civilian and military uses.
The task force extends US efforts beyond a naval blockade of Iranian ports, which CENTCOM says has stopped more than $25 billion in crude oil exports.
The move comes during an eight-month war between the US and Iran, as mediators try to prevent fighting from restarting.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has dismissed the plan, saying it will not cause Iran’s economy to collapse and that Tehran can maintain links with neighboring countries.
The task force’s stated aim is to limit Iran’s ability to replenish its military and fund its operations; it will coordinate with US agencies to pursue that goal.
